Accessible Documents
Hearing from those who design for and who use Assistive Technologies, helped me consider some simple steps I could make to improve access to newsletters, assignments, and other documents more accessible for all users, including those who use screen readers or have limited vision. I was able to apply several of the suggestions to documents I am required to create for my job as Parent Involvement Coordinator. When we create accessible documents computer software becomes an assistive technology for our students and parents - giving them the ability to access information with a facility similar or equal to a person with traditional abilities.
This summer, I will combine what I have learned about making websites and documents accessible to the redesign of the Colleton County School District Title I website. Because I know communicating effectively is important for all educators, I urge you to develop this skill and create accessible documents which also model document organization for students and improve overall understanding for your audience.
